Throughout my completed course of Sea Transportation Systems, I was able to study and gain knowledge on various aspects related to sea transportation systems. During the course, I learned about the regulation, productivity, demand and supply activities, and other key aspects of sea transportation systems at both national and international levels.
One of the major areas covered in the course was the identification of different types of cargo and transporting vessels. We were taught how to calculate the economic ship/vessel’s dimension and speed needed to carry cargo. This knowledge is essential for ensuring efficient and effective transportation of goods through sea routes.
In addition to this, the course also focused on the definition and function of bill of lading (B/L), the different types of B/L, their content, and the process and requirements of shipping. This knowledge is critical for anyone involved in the shipping industry, as it ensures smooth and seamless transactions between buyers and sellers.
Another important topic covered in the course was the definition of sea port and its services. We learned about the services offered by sea ports, such as loading and unloading of cargo, storage facilities, customs clearance, and other related services. During the Pollution and Safety at Sea course, I had the opportunity to learn about various important aspects related to maritime safety and pollution. One of the key areas that we covered was the history of the establishment of MARPOL and its importance in regulating pollution caused by ships. The course also highlighted the growing concern about marine pollution in Indonesia and the need to prevent it. On the course I also learned about providing compensation to those affected by oil pollution.
The MARPOL Convention, according to the MARPOL 1973/1978 PROTOCOL, has several annexes which covers Annex I to Annex VI that outline the key points of its implementation. These annexes cover a range of topics, including oil pollution, sewage, garbage, and air pollution. As someone who is passionate about environmental sustainability, I found these topics extremely informative and interesting.
The course also highlighted the growing concern about marine pollution in Indonesia and the need to prevent it. One of the key areas we focused on was addressing marine pollution caused by oil spill. The course emphasized the most effective ways to address this issue, including surveying ships to achieve the IOPP certificate. On the course I also learned about providing compensation to those affected by oil pollution. Conventions of compensation fund play a critical role in addressing the issue of marine pollution caused by ships.
Overall, the Pollution and Safety at Sea course has been a valuable learning experience for me. It has equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively address the challenges facing the maritime industry today and contribute to the development of sustainable and responsible shipping practices.
